George Bachiashvili is a respected Georgian entrepreneur, investor, and former Millennium Fellow at the Atlantic Council. He earned his MBA from INSEAD, was named in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in 2014, and served as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Georgian Stock Exchange.

As co-founder of the Georgian Co-Investment Fund, he contributed to building Georgia’s largest private equity platform, attracting investment and fostering economic growth.

He is also a loving uncle, a devoted and generous son, and a much-loved friend in places as far-flung as the USA, Ecuador, the UK, France, and Australia.

Why is he in jail?

HE SPOKE OUT AGAINST RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE AND AUTHORITARIANISM.

In March 2025, after publicly criticizing Russian influence and rising authoritarianism in Georgia, George faced politically motivated and fabricated criminal charges. Knowing that his trial and verdict were fixed, with no chance to appeal the false charges, he fled the country to seek asylum.

In May 2025, he was forcibly abducted by the autocratic Georgian government and returned to Georgia without extradition proceedings, which is illegal under international law.

Today, George remains in prison under unsubstantiated charges. He faces a sentence of up to 21 years and is at risk of mistreatment and torture.

George’s detention highlights the dangerous and rapid decline of democracy in Georgia. Georgian judicial and political independence are under attack, as Bidzina Ivanishvili’s administration continues to use the courts to target critics, advocates, and dissenters.

This descent into tyranny not only undermines democracy within Georgia’s borders, but also threatens its Euro-Atlantic aspirations and advances Russian power in the region and beyond.

And with Ivanishvili holding luxury property and business portfolios across the world, we are all complicit if we choose not to speak up against the tide of dictatorial Russian influence.
